The terms of the register
The short, plain version of the agreement between you and this directory. Questions go to hello@heritagemap.net.

What the register is
Heritage Map is a directory of long-running American workshops, farms, kitchens and makers, mapped town by town. Browsing it is free and open to everyone; nothing here is for sale to visitors.
Listings and who answers for them
Anyone may put a business forward through Join the register. By submitting, you say the details are true to the best of your knowledge and that you have the right to share them. The person behind a listing — the submitter, and later the owner on the account — answers for its accuracy, not the register.
Once a business has an owner account, the owner keeps the listing current from the owner dashboard: hours, address, the story of the work.
Moderation
Every submission is read by a person before anything publishes, and there is no guarantee of publication. The register may decline a submission, ask for changes, or remove a listing at any time — for inaccuracy, for falling outside what the register records, or at the owner’s request. Where there is something to say, we say it by email.
An owner’s edits to a live listing go back through review before they show publicly, so the page a visitor reads is always a checked one.
The verified mark
Some listings carry a verified mark. It means the register’s team has checked the business — that it is what and where it says — and it ranks the listing a little higher in results. It is not an endorsement of the work, a guarantee of quality, or a certification. Verification is intended to become part of a paid tier in future; the mark will only ever mean the check happened.
Using the directory
The directory is offered as it is, without warranty. Hours change, shops move, doors close — details on a listing can be out of date even when everyone is careful, so check with the business before travelling. The register is not liable for a wasted drive.
The base map is © OpenStreetMap contributors and the town coordinates come from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0); their own terms apply to reusing that data.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, this page changes and the date at the top moves. Continuing to use the directory after that means the new terms work for you.
